Life Science Development

BioLegend is a San Diego-based supplier of biological research products that recently completed an expansion project in 2019. The expansion project includes four buildings spread over 250,000 square feet and accommodates over 1,000 employees. The project involved consolidating employees who were previously scattered across different locations to better manage operations and meet increasing order demands from customers.

The project included electrical work, lab build-outs, ground-up construction of a new building, renovation of existing buildings, and a new parking structure, totaling over 427,000 square feet. The MEP systems installed include VRF, laboratory high plume exhaust, air handling, gas piping, vacuum, compressed air, smoke evacuation, and industrial water systems.

BioLegend serves biological researchers worldwide, and its recent focus has been on proteogenomics, allowing the detection of proteins on a single cell across tens of thousands of cells simultaneously. The grand opening ceremony was attended by scientific leaders, the San Diego mayor, and representatives from political offices.

Over the past twelve years, we have worked with Akela Engineering & Consulting in designing a wide range of facilities. Significant projects during this time include the $500 Million San Diego County Operations Center and the new $1 Billion Coastal Campus for the Navy SEALs. The firm has consistently provided us with outstanding engineering design and has met every budgetary and scheduling challenge. Their assistance has been particularly valuable whenever we were engaged in best value design/build competitions, and they have made significant contributions to our success in that arena. Our most recent collaboration involved design of the data system for the region’s 9-1-1 emergency response system; we trust them with mission critical facilities because of the firm’s unfailing professionalism and commitment to design excellence.
