The InterContinental San Diego made a grand entrance as the first major high-rise hotel to grace the city’s skyline since the Westgate had opened two decades earlier. After a 31-year absence, Akela was commissioned to provide electrical construction documents for the design and construction of the 18-story luxury hotel. We took great pride in contributing to bringing back this iconic landmark to the city’s skyline.

This project included the construction of a 14-story guest room tower, featuring a stunning rooftop restaurant and bar with breathtaking views of the city. Additionally, there is a 4-story podium with shell retail and restaurant spaces, providing a dynamic and engaging atmosphere for hotel guests and visitors. Three levels of below-grade parking were also included, ensuring ample space for guests to park their vehicles safely and securely.

Akela also designed the site and exterior improvements, including the beautiful outdoor terrace areas that add a touch of elegance to the hotel’s already impressive surroundings. The InterContinental Hotel is now a remarkable addition to San Diego’s skyline, offering luxury accommodations and exceptional amenities.

Akela Engineering & Consulting has been an integral and valued member to our design team on several high-profile projects in Los Angeles and San Diego. They are collaborative, timely, efficient and work well with various municipalities and utility companies. I’d recommend AKELA for any multi-family project.
