Building a mixed-use student residential community

UC San Diego’s Theatre District Living & Learning Neighborhood is a design-build project aimed at building a mixed-use student residential community that serves as a public gateway to the campus. This massive 1,500,000SF student-housing neighborhood is built on a 10.9-acre site of the University of San Diego’s (UCSD) west campus. It will consist of six buildings and will house 2000 beds and support the University’s mission to put student well-being first and connect to the surrounding community. The buildings are shaped to optimize ocean views and range in height from 8 stories up to 22 stories

The project features a natural ecological corridor called “The Ramble,” a plaza surrounded by a restaurant, retail shops, and a market hall, as well as a conference center on top of the gateway building. The residences are designed to enhance students’ psychological and social well-being, with ample opportunities for social connections and clear demarcation between private and public spaces. A four-level parking structure with approximately 1,140 parking stalls will be located below ground.

Akela Engineering & Consulting has continually been a great partner and our work together at UC San Diego is no exception. They were a critical part of our pursuit team and produced the electrical design necessary to complete these housing projects in style.
